Before You Cross

Woodlands Checkpoint is reached via the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) or Seletar Expressway (SLE). Cars, motorcycles, buses, taxis, and commercial vehicles all clear immigration here 24/7.

What to have ready

  • Valid passport for every passenger (check expiry — Malaysia requires at least 6 months validity)
  • Vehicle registration documents if driving
  • Autopass card or cash for the Causeway toll (motorcycles are exempt)
  • Three-quarter tank of fuel if driving a Singapore-registered vehicle — see the fuel rule explained

Lane assignments

Motorcycles use the dedicated bike lane on the left. Cars and taxis use the centre lanes. Buses have a separate clearance area. Follow overhead signs after entering the checkpoint — lanes are clearly marked.

Peak times to avoid

Heaviest queues occur on Friday evenings (5–10 PM, SG → JB outflow), Sunday evenings (6–11 PM, JB → SG return), weekday mornings (5–9 AM, JB → SG worker inflow), and weekday evenings (5–9 PM, SG → JB return). Public-holiday long weekends — Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Good Friday, Deepavali — sustain heavy two-way traffic for 3–5 days. For a specific date, check the Woodlands forecast or our best time to cross Woodlands guide.

For step-by-step driving directions, see our Singapore to Malaysia driving guide or Malaysia to Singapore driving guide. You can also speed up immigration clearance with QR code arrival cards.

About Woodlands Checkpoint

What is Woodlands Checkpoint?

Woodlands Checkpoint is Singapore's main land border crossing, located at 21 Woodlands Crossing on the Johor-Singapore Causeway. Operated by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), it processes immigration clearance for travellers entering and leaving Singapore by road 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Is Woodlands Checkpoint the same as the Johor-Singapore Causeway?

No. The Johor-Singapore Causeway is the 1.06 km road and rail link connecting Singapore to Johor Bahru. Woodlands Checkpoint is the Singapore immigration facility at the southern end of the Causeway. The equivalent Malaysian facility on the other end is the Johor Bahru CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex), formerly known as Sultan Iskandar CIQ.

What is the Malaysian checkpoint at the other end of the Causeway called, and is it covered by live traffic cameras?

The Malaysian complex is officially the Sultan Iskandar Building (Bangunan Sultan Iskandar), commonly called JB CIQ — it opened in 2008, replacing the older Johor Bahru Checkpoint. Traffic on the Malaysian approach is monitored separately by MBJB's iTrafik camera network, run by the Johor Bahru city council, rather than the LTA/ICA feeds this site uses for the Singapore side. The KTM Shuttle Tebrau train linking Woodlands and JB Sentral is due to stop running around mid-2027, six months after the RTS Link opens — until then, road remains the only direct cross-border option for most drivers.

What are the operating hours?

Woodlands Checkpoint operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including public holidays. All vehicle types — passenger cars, motorcycles, buses, and commercial vehicles — are processed at all hours.
