National Day on 9 August produces one of the heaviest crossing weekends of the year at Woodlands Checkpoint and Tuas Second Link. The pattern is consistent across years, and it is not the one most travellers expect: the worst day is the Friday before the holiday, not the holiday itself.
This guide covers what ICA recorded over the 2025 and 2026 National Day long weekends, the wait times to plan for, and how the 2027 long weekend is likely to fall.
The Friday Before National Day Is the Peak Day

In both years the peak landed on the Friday that opened the long weekend — before the public holiday, not on it. Workers and families leave on the last working day, which stacks the outbound rush into a single afternoon and evening.
The practical consequence: if you must travel, the holiday itself is a better bet than the Friday before it.
National Day 2026 Drew More Than 2.1 Million Crossings
Over the four days from 7 to 10 August 2026, more than 2.1 million travellers crossed Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. The 2025 long weekend, 8 to 11 August, carried close to two million.
The single-day peak rose year on year, from more than 558,000 in 2025 to more than 593,000 in 2026 — an increase of roughly 6 per cent.
For scale, 593,000 did not set an annual record. Traveller volume in 2026 peaked on 19 June at more than 598,000 in a single day, which itself passed the previous high of close to 589,000 on 19 December 2025. National Day is among the heaviest weekends of the year, but the June school holidays and the year-end period compete with it.
Expect Up to 3 Hours for Car Departures
ICA reported the same figure after both long weekends: car travellers departing during peak periods waited up to three hours for immigration clearance. ICA attributed the delay to traffic tailback from Malaysia.
Two things to understand about that number:
- It covers immigration clearance only. The vehicle queue on the approach road, before you reach the checkpoint, is additional time on top of it.
- It is a peak-period figure, not an average. Crossing outside the peak windows is materially faster.
ICA also stepped up security checks at all checkpoints from 28 February 2026, citing the heightened global security environment. Longer clearance times during peak travel periods are a stated consequence.
Why National Day Differs From Chinese New Year and Good Friday
National Day is a single public holiday, not a festival period. That changes the shape of the traffic.
- Chinese New Year produces five to seven days of sustained heavy traffic in both directions, because Malaysian workers travel home for reunion dinner.
- Good Friday creates a four-day weekend, with a Thursday departure peak and a Sunday and Monday return peak.
- National Day is a getaway weekend. Outbound traffic compresses into the Friday, and return traffic concentrates on the final day of the long weekend.
Because the outbound surge is compressed rather than spread, the Friday peak at National Day is sharper than the equivalent day at most other long weekends.
National Day 2027 Falls on a Monday
National Day 2027 falls on Monday 9 August, producing a natural three-day weekend from Saturday 7 to Monday 9 August. No substitute holiday applies, because the date does not land on a Sunday.
This changes the pattern described above. With the holiday on a Monday, the departure rush shifts to Friday 6 August, the last working day, and the return rush concentrates on Monday 9 August itself.

How to Cross Faster Over the Long Weekend
Use the QR code. ICA reports that QR code clearance and facial recognition have raised departure-peak throughput by more than 35 per cent against 2019 levels — an additional 7,600 travellers an hour. Consider the bus. ICA advises travellers who must cross during peak periods to consider cross-border bus services. Buses clear through dedicated halls and do not sit in the car queue.
Shift your hours. The quietest windows are before 7am and after 11pm on every day of the long weekend. Crossing overnight is reliably faster than crossing in the afternoon.
Check before you go. Look at the live cameras immediately before leaving. Compare Woodlands against Tuas — during National Day peaks the gap between them narrows, so do not assume Tuas is clear. Our guide on which checkpoint to use covers the trade-off in detail.
Prepare the vehicle. The three-quarter tank rule is enforced on public holidays as on any other day. For Singapore-registered vehicles, confirm your Malaysia VEP tag is active before you queue.
Drive properly in the queue. ICA caught 13 motorists for traffic-related offences and dangerous road behaviour over the 2026 National Day weekend. Penalties include referral to the Traffic Police, being sent back to re-queue from the rear, and entry bans into Singapore.
